Natalie of Wood

Shawn Chappelle

2001, 02:45 minutes, Colour, English

Natalie of Wood renders absurd the American rewrite of history and the decimation of its indigenous peoples through layers of visual performatives. Chappelle's 'blood-red-soaked-coca-cola-remix' of promotional materials for The Searchers slyly deconstructs the Euro-centric anthropology imbued in and propagated by the predominant cultural apparatus. By the naive statement 'we have an endless supply of REAL indians', the Hollywood narrative machinery, once again, unconsciously reveals the commodity-structure that generates its simulacra.
