War Pony

This project is in response to Winnetou, a 1960’s “sauerkraut western” that was filmed in Germany with a German cast, where the “Indians" are played by German people in long black wigs, brown makeup and full buckskin. “Stoic” is an understatement. I created a narrative based on the story line of Winnetou and the Half Blood Apanatshi. The “stoic Apache brave” is played by a six-year old Ojibway boy living on Mnjikaning First Nation, my home, where I grew up. It is about a one afternoon adventure of the boy negotiating both the perils and struggles of an epic adventure as well as stereotypes and outward racism towards him.
