Playback started out as an experiment into recording the movements of Sheffield in one 360° pan, from a high angle above the city over a period of 24 hours. Shot on 35mm film, the piece was made as a loop for gallery exhibition and captures moments of the everyday through time-lapse detail. Subtle and bold changes in light and weather are juxtaposed against a textured soundtrack of the sonic space of Sheffield on a typical Friday night; from evening brawls to newspaper sellers and daily flux. Rigorous practice results in ethereal content with tiny glimmers of action in the distance slowly being revealed through multiple viewing. Playback results in the looking now into the recorded past.
