Maria Plus One, Honeymoon in Utska

Maria Legault

2005, 05:13 minutes, colour, English

The documentation of this live performance is part of larger project entitled Maria Plus One that lasted from 2005 to 2008. The series of photographs, videos, live performances and interventions depicted the artist enacting various romantic rituals with a life size male doll. Honeymoon in Utska showcases one of the multiple honeymoon celebrations by Maria Legault and her male doll Plus One. This celebration of their love depicts the artist offering wedding cake served on her back as she positions herself in “table position” on top of her male doll Plus One. Although this project is humorous and appears to be saccharine sweet and light hearted at first glance, it raises important questions about loneliness, otherness, conformity, gender roles and the institutions of love and marriage. In this piece, the bride is portrayed as akin to a piece of furniture, a table, and a hostess that tries to entertain her guests despite being placed in an awkward position. The performance concludes with the audience breaking into an impromptu and touching song and a generalized dance party.
