La Transformista narrates the life, passions, and tribulations of a 24-year-old transvestite Nicaraguan circus performer called Shayra. Conveying a life trapped within the social situation of undesirable urban areas and the politics of homophobia, Shayra struggles to create a world through her performance where she is no longer a freak, an abomination, but an entertainer. His transvestite act's currency is desire and passion. Shayra's performance is also about creating a sense of community belonging negotiated and re-negotiated on a daily basis.
