RENEGADO

Istvan Kantor

2008, 10:50 minutes, colour, English

TAPECODE 194.38

RENEGADO starts as an abstract noise clip that transforms into an electronic landscape sequence and slowly reveals a cityscape. It surprises us by its rather simple visuals and minimalistic audio track, unusual from Istvan Kantor.

But with a sudden twist Kantor makes us witness a confrontational event in the center of the city. RENEGADO turns into an unexpected and edgy crtitical statement, faithful to Kantor’s anti-authoritarian subvertainment work.

The cityscape disappears but the sound remains the same suggesting what Kantor’s work testifies: the technological system, the city, is part of our system: the body. Kantor’s own displayed body and blood becomes a street-sculpture extended with fire, smoke, the firemen, the police and the passers-by.
