The street dance cypher (dance circle) is a space that has a multitude of functions, one of them being a safe space to settle grudges between groups. This video battle, created out of found Youtube footage, is no different. At stake is the claim of dance as a medium itself and the usage of it.
While television shows like America's Best Dance Crew project a view of dancing as an entertaining past time and mode for self-expression, the word on the street is that it is still complicated, political, spiritual, and racial. This series of desktop Quicktime performances, explore the variety of dilemmas that manifest in the phenomenon of African-American social dance and street dance.
Like in real dance battles, it is up to the audience to decide the victor.
