Four artistic fellows plus four Akademie employees = eight spaces and eight ways of working. The Akademie Schloss Solitude is a place to exchange artistic practices and to network. But at the same time it is an artistic institution, as well as a romantic retreat to a place far removed from the artistic production’s commodity trade. "Arbeit und Freizeit" documents a 60-minute real-time excerpt of the Akademie between work and leisure, between art, service and representation. What and who produces this arrangement and what and whom is produced by it? Networked geniuses or solitary network artists, workhorses or people of leisure? A musique concrète.

The music-, video art- and performance-trilogy "Arbeit und Freizeit“ is suffused with the fables and fiction of Schönberg’s oeuvre. It is a story of legitimation for both artistic and non-artistic production conditions. As public practices, artistic practices are an aspect of cultural practices, and yet artistic work is janus-faced: it is at once work like any other kind of work and a completely different kind of work. "Arbeit und Freizeit“: instead of an opposition, the "und“ connotes a blurred parity.
