Ruse, a city port situated on the Danube River, was the largest city in Bulgaria in the late 19th Century, reflected in its beautiful neoclassical architecture. The city was also known as “Little Vienna”. However in the 20th century river trade declined, and the country went through 45 years of a communist regime followed by a rocky transition to democracy.
