Belinda Smaill

Belinda Smaill was born and raised in New Zealand but has lived and worked in Melbourne, Australia, since 1998. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and an Honors degree from the University of Canterbury (Christchurch) and a PhD in Cultural Studies from Monash University (Melbourne). Belinda has been making short experimental film and video works since the early 90s. This work, which explores the interrelationship between subjectivity, memory and the social world, has screened in festivals and galleries in Australia and New Zealand. Belinda also works as an academic, lecturing in Film and Television Studies at Monash University. A number of her essays have appeared in journals around the world and her book, The Documentary: Politics, Emotion, Culture, was published in 2010.
