Hearing that my mother had her eyes closed for the duration of her wedding ceremony has always struck me. I wanted to explore this experience of my mother as a way to honour her courage and inner resourcing. The trust and grounding in her own self that closing her eyes must have required is a form of resilience and saying yes to uncertainty. I want to see this moment in her life as not just one of being a victim. I want to upend my way of seeing her as helpless and to see her dignity and power. I trace my arrival on Lək̓ ʷəŋən lands and waters through my mother. As a way of introducing myself to the water here, I re-enact many of the wedding rituals my mother underwent with the Salish Sea.

جنت، ہِمت، عِزت، سب آپکے پاؤں تلے ہیں۔
ہر سانس سمندر کی مانند گہری، اپنی آنکھیں بند کرکے دیکھو۔
