"...Silver shows a wizard, played by AA Bronson, scribbling arcane symbols in a grimoire and preparing a ritual space. A black-robed Bronson draws a ritualistic circle with convex mirrors and then unfolds a smaller circular mirror from a scarlet cloth and raises it at the camera. A flash of white light splashes the screen, giving way to a montage of cherry blossoms and a handsome young man on a ledge seen from below. It is a vanitas piece, contrasting youth and age, innocence and experience. Given the queer and occult contexts, the film might also be said to reflect on the love of an older man for a younger one and the alchemist's search for immortality....One of the most salient aspects of the film is Treleaven's casting of Bronson as the Magus. Although dressing the part and surrounded by alchemical props, the elder artist remains wholly himself. There is no disguising this actor.... The mirrors the sorcerer deploys in his ritual are closely associated with Bronson, having played a part in his work since his early self-portraiture projects in the 60s. Part of the film's emotional thrust is imparted by recognizing the artist in the archtype. He is an older queer artist who, having survived the AIDS epidemic that robbed the lives of his two partners in General Idea, has dedicated himself to spiritual pursuits in the context of the art world. Bronson is also, famously, a champion of young, queer artists, coming to their aid with counsel and support." - Elijah Burgher, C Magazine
