The Arcade Project

TAPECODE 1061.16

Site-specific installation for the Long Winter Galleria, a music and art event at the Galleria Mall in Toronto. This piece responded to the arcade cabinets in the mall by taking a video of a perfectly played game of Street Fighter II (thanks and credit to the player Schlauchi and www.longplays.org for providing such an elegant playthrough) and projecting it slowed down until it filled the whole 6 hour duration of the event. On a small monitor nearby, a synced video of the artist’s hand taking notes on the game with the artist in the role of a censor, especially noting its violence and racism. This is inspired by the artist’s time working for the Ontario Film Review Board.
Installation instructions: to be installed as a 2-channel video, but the monitors or projections can be asymmetrical, i.e. on different monitors or projectors, not matching, but the videos must be in sync. When installed, it should be timed so that it counts down to the end of an event or the closing of a gallery.
