This piece is a site-specific video installation created for the Scenic City Film Festival in Owen Sound, Ontario. In the windows of a now-vacant bingo parlour downtown are projected four sets of bingo cards, each being played by the artist using a different colour dauber. The numbers are not called at random, though, but rather as an extended countdown from 75. The game is played out slowly, so that the entire video extends from sunset to sunrise, a full 12 hours. Once the first line is completed (a bingo the hard way, i.e. not using the free space) the free space is stamped and the game continues until one or more players complete a full card.
It is something of a painting, the artist’s hand making a series of ink marks on paper, but played out over time as well as space.
Installation instructions: When installed, it should be timed so that it counts down to the end of an event or the closing of a gallery. Both channels must be on matching monitors or projections beside each other horizontally, and must be in sync. Can be installed in windows with a translucent film or a fabric screen, to be rear-projected facing out into the street.
