Animals on the Verge

Via augmented reality, Google’s ready-made 3D animals, once promoted as the “perfect quarantine activity,” are juxtaposed with hand-drawn depictions of holes in the Earth. Animals stand tentatively at the edge, tread water in, or seem trapped within these crevasses. Some of these holes are moulins — vertical shafts in glaciers created by meltwater; gas emission craters, formed when thawing permafrost violently releases trapped gases; or the infamous Gates of Hell in Turkmenistan — a fiery pit burning continuously since a 1971 Soviet drilling accident. The animals appear curious, distressed, or unaware, suspended in limbo.
