Imaginary Landscapes

Jane Wright

1991, 22:00 minutes, colour/B&W, English

Memories of China expose the limits of experience, and provoke an examination of reality and illusion.
The traveller gazes at the expected; Mao's portrait, the Great Wall, and smiling workers. She photographs the foreign in long shot, and tries to summarize the experience tv-style. She peers out the window, projecting onto what's there. But the landscape has its own stories. The real strains for release.
What we see is illusion. It is through dreams that we can glimpse reality.
