Otakiage (bonfire)

Atsushi Ogata

1989, 16:00 minutes, colour

In Japan, at the end of the year, charms and fortunes are burned up in a bonfire. It is a ceremony of purification, freeing us from the misfortunes of the past year and preparing us for a new beginning... This piece transforms the Buddhist ceremony into an abstract collage of light, color, movement and sound. The tactual quality of the sound and image are intended to "purify" and refresh us.
