TAPECODE 9999.071

The original footage of this videotape records the image of Hayden's feet walking on a terrain which modulates from sculpted lawn to wilderness to river marsh. The edited tape was subsequently reshot in a darkened room using a primitive dolly on a hand-built track. The pre-recorded image, which at first occupies the entire screen, is then re-shot so as to appear to recede progressively into infinity. As their visual information decreases, the audio information increases, conveying through the evidence of sound what is no longer visible by sight.
Hayden, a sculptor, establishes distance on video's two-dimensional surface through the devices of texture, sound and movement rather than depth of field.
