1990, 60:00 minutes, colour, English
The Cause of AIDS: Fact and Speculation, produced at MacLean Hunter Cable TV by award-winning Toronto journalist Colman Jones, features interviews with key figures in the HIV debate, such as Michigan State university professor Robert Scott Root-Bernstein (author of "Rethinking AIDS"), New York AIDS physician and researcher Dr. Joseph Sonnabend, and independent investigator John Scythes of Toronto's Community Initiative for AIDS Research. Also featured are Dr. Norbert Gilmore from Montreal's McGill AIDS Centre, American syphilis expert Dr. Edward Hook, Toronto Hospital's Dr. Richard Fralick as well as leading activists, educators and people with AIDS, including the late Michael Callen.
Part 1, HIV: A Deadly Virus?,
begins with a brief history of the controversy, introducing the debate over whether HIV has been proven to cause AIDS, with a step-by-step examination of the various pieces of evidence used to support HIV as the cause of AIDS. These include test-tube observations in the laboratory, experiments in animals, and epidemiological data on the distribution patterns of HIV and AIDS. Also reviewed are the actual rates at which different people with HIV get sick, and reports of AIDS cases without HIV, profiled in exclusive footage from the July 1992 International Conference on AIDS in Amsterdam.
