If You Don't Like It, Don't Call

Jeff Moore

TAPECODE 450.02

The gay man portrayed in If You Don't Like It, Don't Call avoids face to face conversations with any human being because his answering machine can deliver all of his mixed messages for him. His self-imposed isolation distances him from the possible rejection of a potential boyfriend and leads to some humorous lies. He also tries to use the telephone to avoid confrontations with his own pain. AIDS hovers above this monologue and threatens to undermine a gay man's attempt to deliver a healthy and attractive performance.
