Train Of Thought

1995, 19:53 minutes

TAPECODE 10202

In twenty short minutes, Train Of Thought captures the hypnotic rhythm of the 36 hour meandering journey from Winnipeg to Churchill. There is no hurry on this train. It is a dog-eared cocoon of relaxation where time slowly slips by in rhythm to the endless miles of bush passing silently outside the windows.
The video focuses on the stories of people who take the train - residents, workers and tourists - and the casual conversation which naturally occurs between this diverse group of fellow travelers. The conversations are rich examples of the contemporary story-telling tradition that still exists on this train ride - an anomaly of modern times.
The stories are coupled with a visual and musical interpretation of Manitoba's northland. Utilizing both treated and untreated images,we create a vibrant montage of colour and form, which is brought to life by Greg Lowe's haunting soundtrack. The result is an ebb and flow of conversation, music and images which mimic the gentle rhythm of the train.
