CANADA CUBA VOLUNTEER BRIGADE 1996

"In support of Cuba" documents various aspects of Cuba's current social and political context, as experienced through the eyes and ears of Canada's 1996
Amigos de Cuba Work Brigade Volunteers.

...the 1996 Amigos de Cuba "brigadistas"... people of all ages, from various walks of life and from many regions of Canada... choosing to learn about the economic, political and social reality of Cuba firsthand by assisting in the harvest in Ciego de Avila Province, Central Cuba.

In August 1996, Krysta Siuda was one of a group of 57 volunteer brigade members or "brigadistas" who worked and traveled in Cuba for 3 weeks. The brigadistas spent 2 weeks working in the fields on several cooperative farms, in the process, getting to know local communities. The group spent the last week at an international camp near Havana. Activities included outings to various sites of historical, social and cultural interest in and around Havana.

"In Support of Cuba" can serve as a valuable tool for social justice and global development educators and organizations. It can be used as a springboard for discussion about Cuba, and as a first step towards sensitizing viewers to Cuba's situation. It is the videographer's hope that viewers may also be inspired to embark on projects (large or small) that would contribute towards improving conditions for the Cuban people.

"This video was far better than I expected, considering the difficult conditions under which it was made. The repeated focus on unexpected details had strong emotional impact and gave me evocative glimpses of the Cuban reality." - sibylle preuschat, writer, activist.
