A painting genre from the early years of the 18th Century on the theme of the Garden of Love

This 3-part video, made for an exhibition called Canadian Shield, is about the landscape, not as a site for contemplation, but as a place for action. A luscious red mouth devours the icon of the berry, which figures so prominently in Canadian landscape mythology. The landscape is sexualized. Most of the video is shot in someone’s backyard. In the second section the berries become part of a cake that flies through the air like a crown, before being trampled by a pair of feet. In the last section there are images of liberation, sensuality, bare feet moving through apples and water, then on shaded soil, crashing waves blending into a smiling water sprite. The Canadian landscape, vast, intimidating and often dangerous, is here seen as a place for celebration, sexuality and liberation.
