Somalia: Yellow Blood is a collaborative venture between artist Allan Harding MacKay and critically acclaimed composer/songwriter and poet Donald Rubinstein.
In March 1993 Allan Harding MacKay was commissioned by the the Canadian Armed Forces Civilian Artist program to document, through works of art, Operation, Deliverance and Cordon, the humanitarian aid missions carried out by the Canadian Forces in Somalia under United Nations direction.
His overall and resounding impression is expressed as a motif throughout the video visuals; high tech military machinery juxtaposed against scenes of everyday life in Somalia. The video in many ways acknowledges the efforts of the majority of Canadian peacekeepers to achieve the goals of their humanitarian mission, and honours the Somalia people's survival and continuation as a traditional society in a harsh natural environment, amid the violence of a civil war.
