Box of Treasures

TAPECODE 3002.00

In the late 19th century, the Canadian government removed ritual objects from the possession of the Kwakiutl. In 1980, at Alert Bay, British Columbia, the U'Mista Cultural Centre opened its doors to receive and house the cultural treasures which were seized decades earlier. This film documents the cultural significance of these events for today's Kwakiutl people. A companion film to Potlatch: A Strict Law Bids Us Dance.
