"Fat wooden water towers, those old ladies of the rooftops, meet old ladies of the streets. Barbara Sternberg's video musical to New York!" - Rae Davis
New York Counterpoint is one of three video 'portraits' of three cities. The other two titles are:
(Rome) Skyling on about Rome, Italy, the city of light
Jakarta, on Jakarta, Indonesia, the city of patient smiles
Each tape features one architectural feature and one segment of the population: New York's wooden water towers and old ladies; Rome's Vatican statues and nuns; Jakarta's walls and young men.
Each tape and the movement of each city is set next to a piece of music;
New York Counterpoint: "New York Counterpoint" by Steve Reich,
(Rome) Skyling: "Skyling" and "in Paradisum, part 4" by Michael J. Baker
Jakarta: "Music for Mallet Instruments" by Steve Reich
The three tapes are independent of each other and can be seen separately.
