Artist Statement

Kinga Araya

2003, 03:45 minutes, Colour, n/a

TAPECODE 507.17

A naked female figure stands back to the camera, facing the wall. She hits the wall monotonously with towels. The video is almost in black and white, the only colour is a towel, first yellow, then red & blue. Formally, the video refers to the photographic series of New Orleans' prostitutes taken by E.J. Belloq. However, Araya's use of colour refers to her artistic beginnings as a painter. During the video, colourful towels overlap each other creating derivative colours. The towels seem to change into multicolourful (multicultural) flags. Finally, Artist Statement has many connotations: social, feminist, political, even historical, being a statement about painting.
