Children Are Not The Problem

1992, 30:00 minutes

TAPECODE 9507

This is a new and unique resource that looks at anti-racist education for young children. It's a subject of growing importance yet almost no films and tapes have addressed it.
In the tape, day-care and primary school teachers, plus parents from many different cultures, talk about the need to be more conscious and sensitive to children's varied backgrounds.
How do we deal with name-calling and stereotyping of other children when we first hear it? Do we feel embarrassed and hope the child will "grow out of it" or do we have a way of talking directly about racial difference? How can we encourage our children to be open to other cultures, especially when the others have a different skin colour?
Prejudice starts at an early age. Parents and teachers need to develop methods of talking directly and without fear about racial difference. This tape will give parents and teachers new ideas for making the most of the rich cultural and racial diversity now found in Canadian communities.
