Reforestation (and a Topography of Longing)

Lezli Rubin-Kunda

2006, 03:15 minutes

" I sit and plant and paint to the sound of the loons who call mournfully to each other all summer long across the lakes, attempting to bridge the two forested landscapes, the two worlds that I call 'home.'"
In the stairwell of an old building on Herzl Street in Tel Aviv, the cracks in the peeling walls recall the maps of the waterways and canoe routes of the northern Ontario forests of the artist's childhood. The artist colors in the forms of the lakes and rivers.
On the landing wall an image of northern forests and lakes is projected, and the sound of lunes calling fills the space. Here she plants a forest, that continues the projected forest,
"despite the knowledge that this forest, like the many other forests that we have planted here, is not at all like those childhood forests; evergreens, but not indigenous, not endless and uncharted but planned, ordered, planted purposefully and intentionally."
