Back + Forth

Scott Treleaven

2009, 31:30 minutes, colour

"...a series of orbs float left and right across the field of an image projected high on the gallery wall. They vary in size, implying differing proximities or degrees of importance, but each contains moving images: light shimmering in a fountain's spray, branches in silhouette against an overcast sky, the nape of a young man's neck. The imagery is drawn from footage the artist has shot since his early teens, representing a life lived up to a certain point. Its retrospective effect is not, however, the rapid-fire montage of one's life flashing before one's eyes, suggesting instead a liminal zone between life and death. The fragmentary and nonlinear recapitulation of personal history in Back + Forth is akin to scraps from the cutting room floor in freefall through some empty space - 'word and image dust,' to use one of William Burroughs' oftrecurring phrases." - Elijah Burgher, C Magazine
