In 1985 I spent two months in Kyoto, Japan studying the gardens and temple architecture.
I was given permission by the Imperial Household Agency to visit Katsura Imperial Villa for one week alone and unattended.
I was able to go inside the buildings to photograph and film freely.
In 1979 I saw
MA: Space-Time in Japan by Arata Isozaki in NYC at the Cooper Hewitt Museum.
I was deeply inspired by the ideas in this exhibition before going to Japan.

architecture of the film / drawing of the film
grain of the Super 8 film / flow with the camera
the fleeting moment / accidental possibilities
imperfection / incompleteness
vulnerability and slowness
MA space / time
a pause in time, an interval, an emptiness in space
transient flawed beauty
space that holds potential… the essential void between things
the space that shapes the film
