Preliminary Notes For A Western

"In Preliminary Notes for A Western, Robert Morin creates an ironic rendition of the genre. Employing all the necessary stereotypes - the archetypal characters and frames - he structures a classic western. The setting is rural Alberta and everybody is au rendez-vous. Buff Cort, the bad guy, a tough bull rider, kills a rancher while trying to steal one of his cattle. Frank, the sheriff, pursues him though Frank must die in ambush so that good guy Kelsey Taggart can enact the classic duel with Cort. Predictably, Taggart-the-hero wins and what's more, he unwittingly wins the heart of Ada, the object of affections. Henry, the hired hand, also hopes to conquer Ada: he is the false pretender (love always needs a triangle to distinguish the real pretender from the false one). Then there is Dale Evans, the good-natured stripteaser in search of a better life, whose basal interests are a foil for Ada's respectability. When the video ends with the good guy versus bad guy shootout, all characters are assembled as witnesses, since morality requires a proper audience for its triumphant climax." -Mireille Perron
