THE BARRACUDA CONTINGENCY stands as a metaphor for a set of deep-sea ted fears concerning the general nature of unpredictability and the absence of certainty that so often underpin the contemporary landscape. Michel Foucault, in Discipline & Punish examines the structure of control through the coercive use of state power: that is, the state’s capacity to discipline and punish those deemed to have transgressed against its laws. In THE BARRACUDA CONTINGENCY, the viewer is confronted with a piano concerto, the façade of a building, and a designated recreational area, each of which is inscribed with certain hierarchical conventions defining how these phenomena maybe engaged with – accessed, enjoyed, rejected, wholly embraced, or alienated from. And yet, these are not the answers or solutions that emerge from the tangle of options offered. The answer, if there is one, is more horrific – the answer lies in the jaws of the barracuda.
