Self-Portrait Sleeping

Rachel Echenberg

2009, 07:35 minutes, colour, No Dialogue

TAPECODE 543.06

This video is an excerpt from an installation of sixteen video portraits filmed in front of television sets, evident through the reflected flickering light. The state of watching creates neutral expressions that then open to towards physical reactions; crying, laughing, falling asleep, sweating and nosebleeds become the visible and visceral responses seemingly caused by a dislocated source.

Self-Portrait Sleeping is the artist’s own portrait from this series in which the struggle to stay awake becomes a futile dance.
