Boyfriend (男友) features East Asian male diaspora discussing a variety of perspectives on heterosexual love and masculinity. The video combines YouTube vlogs and webcam videos with seductive images of dominant East Asian masculinity. A melange of K-pop boy bands, J-Pop has-beens, Taiwanese idols, and former-Cantopop crooners are cut to an earnest Mandarin cover of Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend”. Somewhere in there Jay Park, a diasporic pop-star-turned-rapper rips off his shirt to reveal his chiseled figure. We watch as a straight Asian couple walking away–the guy holding his girlfriend's handbag. Contains concert footage, interview, Youtube vlog footage.
