Freya Hattenberger

Freya Hattenberger was born 1978 in Offenbach/ Main, Germany and lives and works in Cologne, Germany.

The central point in the work of Cologne based media artist Freya Hattenberger concerns aspects and needs of the body and its relation to social and ecological environments. Mainly, she works in a performative way in video performances, video-and sound installations and photography. There she examines questions of autonomy and representation of femininity in terms of expectations towards gender-like behaviour. Sound and the use of voice as indicators are key-elements of her work. The female body appears as communicator and medium of the argument - and is therefore linked to technical processes like feedback and distortion.

Freya Hattenberger spent artist residencies in Paris and Amsterdam. She received her M.A. (with honours) from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne in 2006 and the Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff-Bursary in 2008. Her work has been exhibited at the European Media Art Festival (Osnabrück), Transmediale (Berlin), Museum Ludwig (Cologne), 3015 (Paris), Mediations Biennale (Poznan, Poland), Lothringer13 (Munich), CONSORTIUM (Amsterdam, Netherlands) Ausstellungshalle für Zeitgenössische Kunst, (Münster), Kunsthalle (Bremen), MARTa (Herford), Videotage (Hongkong, China) and will be exhibited at the MO Museum am Ostwall (Dortmund) in autumn 2010.

In addition to her artistic practice, she is founding member and active contributor to the Cologne based arts organisation OPEKTA e. V. Together with Peter C. Simon she is the Performance Duo "Les Éclairs“.
