Give Up the Ghost
is a single-channel video formed by several linked but discordant segments. It is a story of broken hearts, domestic phantoms, and everyday interpersonal relationships that builds from discrete gestures into a larger narrative on anxiety and loss. The title suggests the fracture of its parts: ‘give up the ghost’ is a euphemism that replaces the finality of ‘death’ or ‘dying’ with a spectral afterlife. The phrase makes concise the intangibility of loss while coyly defusing its immateriality. The video continues this circumnavigation: there is rarely a mention of human mortality but other words, images, and actions reveal its approach.
