The Lie in Wait
incorporates animation and documentary in a linked, episodic narrative: the single-channel video features short sequences of cartoon ‘morality fables’, composited tableaus, and recorded family stories. The various narratives told in the work use metaphor to create meaning, often becoming metaphoric in their own telling. In the video’s different and repeated segments, visual and linguistic metaphors reveal themselves as symptoms of what is repressed by the storyteller. The structure of The Lie in Wait, the relation of its parts in a signifying chain, allegorizes each subjects’ own replacement by another and reveals something in lie and wait beneath the surface of what is screened.
