Stone Tape: A haunting is an episodic video series that, through the lens of the haunting, examines the relationships between lands and the beings that live with and on them. Inspired by community conversation and environment and historical research in Quebec’s Bas-Saint-Laurent region, Stone Tape: A haunting seeks to ask what is lost when lands change? What impressions of the past still haunt these spaces? And what possibilities exist in that haunted space?
In Canada, lands have been scarred and transformed beyond recognition by anti-Indigenous and anti-Black violence; imperial and capital expansion; and the extractive practices on which these rely. With these practices ongoing in various forms, lands continue to change, fluctuate and even disappear entirely. Through speculative pasts, presents, and futures, Stone Tape: A haunting examines how these legacies have shaped and transformed the lands we live on and within, while considering the spectres that have been inherited alongside these histories.
