Kaposi's Sarcoma (A Plague and its Symptoms)
1983, 25:21 minutes, colour, English
TAPECODE 140.07
“The tape is about the way AIDS has been represented by medical journalism in particular and the dominant media in general. Contemporary medical research is destroying a movement that the gay liberation movement has built up, that is an autonomous, proud, homoerotic body, and is reconstructing that body as a pathological and morbid body that shows symptoms of disease. […] As far as I’m concerned, the way that AIDS has been represented by the media is nothing more than a sophisticated form of queer bashing.” – Stuart Marshall, Gayblevision (Cable 10 West End TV, Vancouver, 1983; courtesy of VIVO).
Presumed lost for decades, this surviving copy was recovered by researcher Conal McStravick from SAW Gallery's archives in 2024, and is likely to be the first AIDS activist video in the global AIDS media archive. Produced by Stuart Marshall for the SAW Gallery International Festival of Video Art in 1983.
