Brains On Toast: The Inexact Science of Gender

Joyan Saunders and Liss Platt

1992, 23:30 minutes, colour, English

TAPECODE 173.13

This experimental narrative aims to question and undermine popular assumptions about gender and sexuality. Specifically it explores the role that biological science has played in creating narrow definitions of masculinity and femininity. The piece takes an irreverent look at the categories of "brains, hormones, reproduction, and private parts". There are seven characters, women and men, who are connected through an unorthodox seminar on science, gender, and sexuality. Most of the action occurs in nonacademic locales, including bedrooms, kitchens and the zoo.
