Realizing the extreme inadequacy of local information on AIDS, DiAna took on the task of educating the black community in Columbia, South Carolina. For the past three years, she's been handing out free condoms and brochures at her salon, redecorating the entrance with a tree made of syringes and skeletons, lecturing to women's business clubs and church congregations about safe sex, videotaping grade school children asking questions about AIDS, recruiting teenage talent to sing the message, and holding safe sex verbalization parties with silly but sensuous sex toy prizes. The creative strategies and non-judgemental concern of the South Carolina AIDS Education Network, aka DiAna, certainly offers a model for making a difference.
