Mayworks: Festival Of Culture And Working Life

Craig Berggold and Teresa Marshall

1989, 12:00 minutes, colour/B&W, English

TAPECODE 240.04

Culture is at the heart of every social movement. A diversity of people - artists, feminists, trade unionists - are organising Vancouver's Mayworks. Their ideas are represented in three main areas: art produced by workers about their working life; cultural work as part of the social labour struggle; and artists as workers.

"We are looking for a mingling of the artist and labour communities. Promoting a positive self-image of working people through cultural expressions is key." -Phil Vernon (Vancouver Song Writer)

This tape is an excellent introduction to community and labour arts in Canada. Craig Berggold is also the program coordinator of the Vancouver Mayworks Festival.
