When we are children, we are very often told what characteristics we have. We are told we are sullen, and are sullen. We are referred to as the shy one, and act the shy one. I found it difficult, as a child, to articulate my feelings because my behaviour was read, translated for me and projected back to me, becoming a kind of script of expectation and also judgment. I find this pattern continues and becomes more difficult to circumvent as an adult. This work is an attempt to express both the imprinting of expectation, and the veiling of expression. " -D.S.
