Audition #37 is the first in Michelle Kasprzak's new "Auditions" series. The Auditions series examines private hygiene rituals through displacement, by performing them in the public realm.
Audition #37 showcases the private ritual of oral hygiene, specifically, brushing one's teeth. The artist brushes her teeth in the bookstore, the meat department of the grocery store, at the bank machine, on a park bench,
et cetera. This banal action becomes a strange act of disclosure when performed in public. Toothbrushing is considered a normal daily practice for North Americans, and yet as a performance for bystanders it is a confession of preoccupation with appearance and cleanliness.
