The Roll of the Artist: An Adventure in Art

John Marriott

2004, 13:43 minutes, colour, English

"The Roll of the Artist" uses post-modern panache to humourously conflate performance art, academic lectures and circus spectacles within the format of a deconstructive stunt lecture. This reflexive video overlays documentation of the documenting of a lecture/stunt/spectacle to playfully subvert an array of heroic cultural conventions. Staging a photo-op/stunt the artist narrator, with his stunt double, contorts the conventions of linear narrative and non-linear shooting to present an absurdist Sisyphean drama. In this 'Adventure in Art and Delegation' a stunt-double assumes physical risks while the artist assumes the aesthetic risks in this brief moment of defiant triumph.
