Dudar’s antecedent running-based performances were executed in a straightforward manner, with limited improvisation. The last of these filmed performances, Crash Points 2, was re- choreographed by the playback medium: in-and-out- of-sync two screen projection. In the subsequent Penetrated (male) and Penetrated (female) films, from which Penetrated M+F is derived, Dudar applied his two screen techniques to all improvisation situations: male-on-male and female-on-female sparring matches. In Penetrated M+F the screen is subsequently split into four, creating a sensory overload, but foregrounding the very different characteristics of the male and female parts of the film.
In Penetrated M+F, as in the earlier running- based pieces, there is repetition, but movements are based on immediate strategy and not at all emotion free. The performers are conflicted by form and function—by the desire to look good versus the desire to win.
Re-mastered in 2014.
