Voices of Positive Women is a groundbreaking documentary examination of the impact of HIV and AIDS on the lives of women. Working from material published in the book "Positive Women," a collection of personal accounts of women from all over the world living with AIDS and HIV, video director Darien Taylor and producer Michael Balser have constructed a moving and powerful series of portraits of women speaking about their experiences for the first time.
Bravely sharing their experiences publicly in what until now has been a void of information and support, and in some cases medical and bureaucratic denial that women are even at risk, the nine women presented in Voices of Positive Women speak compellingly on their own terms of their personal struggles for survival and voice.
Some of the crucial issues which emerge from this series of first-person portraits of women speaking out are: their reaction to testing HIV positive; the loss of their partners to AIDS; the importance of maintaining vital and meaningful sexuality; the inadequacy of services for women with HIV / AIDS; the compounding of discrimination for HIV + women of colour; and the transformation from isolation to community activism.
Ce documentaire lyrique, basé sur une anthologie du même titre récemment publiée, appartient à un nouveau type de vidéos sur le SIDA, dans lesquels des personnes atteintes par la maladie peuvent raconter leur vie et leurs expériences.
