The Guy Next Door is a 20-minute video on the causes, impact and consequences of physical, sexual and emotional male youth violence against females. Candid, face-to-face interviews with male abusers and sisters, mothers and girlfriends portray the actions of abusive male youth as learned behaviours directed at gaining power and control. The family, media and gender role socialization/stereotyping are presented as key psychosocial factors contributing to the abusive behaviours of male youth against females. The Guy Next Door will provide a valuable educational and therapeutic tool for schools, the police, social service professionals and the broader community. Aimed at a general viewing audience, this video encourages male youth to take responsibility for abusive behaviours. Likewise, mothers, sisters, and girlfriends abused by male youth are encouraged to seek support. The Guy Next Door comes with a facilitation guide to assist viewers in dealing with the issues raised in the video. This guide contains a brief abstract, guidelines for viewing the video and sample discussion questions.
